Mattoon Woman Killed in Weekend Crash in Coles County

A Mattoon woman was fatally injured in a crash on US Route 45 in Coles County over the weekend.

Killed in the crash was 21-year-old Vanessa R. Worstell. Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers said Worstell was seven months' pregnant, and the baby died, as well.

The crash happened shortly after 7pm Saturday near the Douglas County line. Five people were traveling in the passenger car that was headed northbound. Worstell was a passenger in the car. The driver, whose name has not been released, was reportedly airlifted from the scene of the crash. The names of the other three occupants, whose names were also not released, did not suffer serious injuries. Two of those occupants are from Greenup.

The highway was closed in the area of the crash for about three hours.
