Over 1,000 Volkswagens were welcomed to Mid America Motorworks' corporate headquarters earlier this month for the annual Volkswagen Funfest. This year's Funfest for Air Cooled VWs event had a "Volktoberfest" theme.

After a Friday of touring the Funfest grounds, the group took a 20-mile cruise through rural Effingham County, concluding with a parade through downtown Effingham. Hundreds of VWs surrounded the Courthouse square for the Downtown Welcome Fest Party.

Mayor Jeff Bloemker participated in the Saturday morning Opening Ceremonies including the traditional Oktoberfest custom of tapping a keg of beer and offering a toast to the celebration.

The Big Idaho Potato was a part of the celebration and its crew led the crowd in various activities including a fundraiser for the Harmony Playground to be developed in Effingham.

The Waterloo German Band performed traditional German music on Saturday evening, just ahead of the showing of the Disney movie, "Herbie Fully Loaded".

A variety of awards are presented throughout the celebration.

Plans are already in the works for the 2018 Funfest for Air Cooled VW, which will mark the 20th annual Funfest and the 80th anniversary of the Volkswagen Beetle.
