The Lake Land College Board of Trustees has approved creation of a campus park.

The park will be located in the area near the campus pond and the John Deere Ag Tech Building toward the end of the cross country path. The path will be accessible to those with disabilities.

Additionally, a veterans memorial will be a part of the park. Input will be sought from local veterans groups and from Lake Land alums who are veterans as to the makeup of the memorial.

Plans are for the work on the park to begin this summer with completion by October.

The park is to be named the Dr. William L. and Margaret Podesta Park. The Podestas, who lived across Route 45 from campus, have benefitted the college for many years and made a contribution years ago that has accrued in value so the park can be developed. A formal decision on naming the park will come later this year. Dr. Podesta is a former Lake Land College trustee.

The naming was proposed by the College Foundation Board, which also has proposed a naming in the Northwest Building.

The dental hygiene lab would be named the Heartland Dental Dental Hygiene Lab for a period of five years. The naming would be due to a donation from Heartland Dental involving an upgrade in equipment. The donation includes computers to be available to students while they're working and ergonomic improvements to the lab and equipment.

Under naming guidelines, a period of time has to elapse before a naming recommendation can be formally approved by the Board of Trustees.

The Lake Land Board also approved a series of policy upgrades, approved a base salary adjustment for administrative, supervisory and support staffers as well as for non-contractual employees.

At a special meeting last week, trustees reviewed the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year. The budget totals $77,216,321 including an operating funds blueprint of $43,283,972.

As earlier pledged, the budget does not include any increase in tuition, but does include some fee increases. The measure will be voted on at the July meeting.
