A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday morning to officially open Gillenwater Avenue to the public.

The street is located on the west side of the city and was initially built to provide access to Truck Centers, Inc. The business has been in operation since April. A grand opening for the business will take place later this year.

The street is named for past mayor and current City Commissioner Merv Gillenwater, part of an effort to have a roadway in town named for each of Effingham's mayors. Gillenwater served as mayor from 2011 to 2015 after a term as commissioner. He decided not to seek another term as mayor, but did want to remain on the Council and won a commissioner seat in the 2015 election.
