Cumberland school district officials are thankful for the help received from Greenup and county health department forces when the district suffered a water main break.

Cumberland School Superintendent Todd Butler gave "a big thank you to the Village of Greenup Board and their utility department workers" for their quick response and troubleshooting. Butler said officials "truly made the school a priority." He also thanked Steve Sherwood of the Cumberland County Health Department, who arranged for a donation of bottled and canned water (over 60,000 bottles and cans). 35,000 bottles of Dasani water was donated by Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Company and 30,000 cans of water was donated by Donnewald Anheuser Busch. The Health Department also assisted Butler in putting together information about how to manage a school under a boil order.

Butler also acknowledged the job by his staff in adjusting to the change in routine due to the break.

Cumberland Board President Jack Ingram presented the District's Above and Beyond Award to Deanna Cox. Ingram said Cox has made "selfless donations of technology for our students." He said Cox donated a special device for students that aren't able to verbally communicate. This device has a visual component that interprets eye gaze as a method of communication. The device when purchased was worth over $25,000.

Board members were reminded that Kindergarten registration and screening at Cumberland will be held May 25 from 3-7pm and May 26 from 10am-12:30pm at Toledo Christian Church. Parents/guardians need to email Sherry Parker at sparker@cumberland.k12.il.us to schedule an appointment.

In personnel matters, the Board accepted the resignation of elementary teacher Katie Weathers and teacher Angie Boger as of the end of the school year; hired Jordan Shore, Shelby Storm and Jenna Layton as elementary teachers; and posted job openings for high school head and assistant baseball coaches, high school head and assistant softball coaches, high school assistant wrestling and middle school assistant volleyball coach.
