Students Learn About City, County Government on Law Day

(EFFINGHAM COUNTY STUDENTS MEET TO TALK WITH COUNTY BOARD MEMBERS AT THE CONCLUSION OF THURSDAY'S LAW DAY ACTIVITIES)

Effingham County students had the opportunity to learn about the workings of city and county government Thursday during the 2017 Law Day observance.

Law Day is a nationwide event sponsored annually by the Elks.

Effingham and St. Anthony High school students became city government leaders for a day, participating in tours of city facilities, getting to fire guns at a shooting range, enjoying lunch at the Effingham Elks Lodge Home on South Banker, and took part in a mock City Council meeting.

Mayor--Matt Linders of EHS, Commissioner of Accounts and Finances Mitchell Sager of SAHS, Commissioner of Public Health and Safety Grant Wolfe of EHS, Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements Joseph Kabbes of SAHS, Commissioner of Public Property Brendan Dawkins, City Administrator Chris Shimboff of EHS, Public Works Director Chance Hull of EHS, Public Works Operations Manager Ryan Huelsbusch of EHS, City Engineer Wyatt Keith of EHS, Economic Development Director Brogan Hull of EHS, Economic Development Specialist Augie Heal of SAHS, Director of Tourism Marci Miller of SAHS, City Clerk Will Starwalt of EHS, Chief of Police Tyler Lindsey of EHS, Police Department Communications Manager Nick Martelli of SAHS, Fire Chief Patrick Tegeler of SAHS, Assistant Fire Chief Alessandro Boca of EHS, EMA Coordinator Derek Kruger of SAHS, Building Official Shelby Mooney of EHS, Accounting Administrator/City Treasurer Holden Arthur of EHS, and City Attorney Jackson Willenborg of SAHS.

Students from Altamont, Dieterich and Teutopolis high schools worked with county officials, doing job shadowing, taking tours, utilizing the firing range, lunching at the Elks, and meeting with County Board members at the close of the day.

Other Teutopolis High participants were Andres Trevino, Jacob Herd, Mikayla Blankenship, Julia Henderson, Nicole Deters, Joey Siemer, Mitchell Cowman, Jeremy Boehm and Elizabeth Will.

Participants from Altamont High were Mitchell Stevenson, Kolby Pemberton, Jesus Flores, Fernando Romo and Wyatt Stone.

Dieterich High participants were Kayle Holste, Kiersten Goodman and Evan Kuhl.
