Regional Superintendent of Education Julie Wollerman has received a state award for work with at-risk youth.

The Illinois Coalition for Educating At-Risk Youth marked an addition to its statewide conference with the awarding of the Excellence in Education for nominated educators.

Three regional winners were selected. Wollerman was selected from among the three for the statewide award.

Wollerman is the Regional Superintendent for Effingham, Fayette, Bond, Christian and Montgomery Counties and has over 25 years' experience in working with vulnerable populations of youth. She led in the creation of student ambassadors in alternative programs and fought for funding at-risk programs through her testimony in front of the General Assembly and the Illinois State Board of Education.

In addition to the Excellence in Education award, the Coalition hosts the Outstanding Student Awards. These awards are an annual competition where at-risk students from across the state are nominated by Coalition members for moving past obstacles and becoming more successful in life.

Among the recipients are Brisa Sanchez of New Beginnings ROE and Colton Trimble of ROE 3 Aspire Alternative High School.
