For the second year in a row, Healthgrades has named Clay County Hospital a recipient of their Patient Safety Excellence Award. There were 460 hospitals across the nation that achieved the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award.

This distinction places an elite group of hospital recipients within the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated for their superior performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays. Healthgrades said 134,568 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals performed like the winners did.

Clay County Hospital was one of only 22 hospitals given this award in the state of Illinois.

“Our analysis reveals that patient safety is strongly associated with high quality care, so it is vitally important to choose a hospital that performs well on these key indicators,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “In addition, we found that consumers are increasingly using patient experience and satisfaction as a measure to both evaluate hospitals and to select where they want to obtain care, so hospitals need to listen to patients about what matters most in driving patient evaluations of their hospital.”

“Stressing the need to practice the fundamentals of patient safety is a key factor in Clay County Hospital’s success,” Chris Hunt, CEO and President of Clay County Hospital stated.  “We have worked very hard to ensure the safety of all of our patients, from the emergency room to inpatient services, and it is gratifying to see our hospital recognized.”
