Problems with an exhaust fan resulted in a run by Effingham firefighters to Stanfield Chiropractic on West Jefferson just after 8am Tuesday.

Dr. Rodney Stanfield said at the scene that it was an exhaust fan in a bathroom at the facility, located just north across Jefferson from Martin's IGA. Reports indicated the building began filling with smoke, resulting in the call to firefighters. Firefighters went to the roof of the structure to make sure the fire hadn't spread throughout the roof of the building.

Effingham Fire Chief Joe Holomy said the fire had just begun to move along the roof trusses when it was extinguished. Firefighters had to remove the ceiling of the bathroom to gain access to the fire. Holomy said the fire did an estimated $5,000 damage.

Those in the building evacuated without any problems; no one was injured.
