Mattoon Firefighters Handle Call Overnight

Mattoon firefighters handled a fire at a Mattoon home overnight Sunday night.

Firefighters were called to 909 Wabash Avenue in Mattoon at 10:05pm. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke in the basement and flames showing by the back door up and in the ceiling between the first and second floors.

Firefighters entered the structure and were able to knock down the fire. There was fire in the walls and ceiling areas found during the overhaul. Smoke, fire and water damage was noted throughout the residence.

Two occupants were home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause and point of origin of the fire is still being determined.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:23am Monday.
