St. Elmo school board members Monday approved moving ahead with development of a modified grading scale. The project will include an honors course plan.

School officials are hoping for a plan that will better challenge academically talented students.

The current grading system awards an "A" to a student acheiving a 90 or better. The thought is to add "minuses" and "pluses" to the letter grades. For example, a score of 97 to 100 would earn an A+, a score of 93 to 96 would garner an A, and a score of 90 to 92 would result in an A-.

The goal is to encourage higher achieving students to risk taking a tougher course load.

The other part of the plan is to offer some honors courses with those courses carrying more weight in the class ranking system.

The Board also accepted a letter of retirement from Karla Drewes as of the end of the school year, and scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday night at 8:00 for a student disciplinary hearing.

Board members rejoined the IHSA for next year, approved an amended calendar for this school year, and renewed membership in the SEPCO Purchasing Cooperative.
