A Springfield Police Department officer has been arrested in connection with an altercation during a criminal investigation earlier this week.

Illinois State Police were requested by the Springfield Police Department Monday to investigate a report of an altercation between an on-duty SPD officer and a 19-year-old male from Springfield.

The officer had been dispatched to a residence Monday evening to investigate a domestic disturbance. A 19-year-old male (not the suspect from the domestic disturbance) became upset, and a verbal altercation ensued, which led to a physical confrontation between the officer and the male. The 19-year-old male was not arrested. The incident was captured on the officer's body worn camera, as well as another responding officer's body worn camera.

The video evidence was provided by the Springfield Police Department to State Police investigators, who then consulted with the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office. The officer was arrested at 6am Tuesday at the Springfield Police Department on charges of battery and official misconduct.

Authorities term the situation "an active and ongoing investigation".
