Two Weekend Crashes in Effingham

Two crashes resulting in injuries occurred in Effingham over the weekend.

One crash happened at 9:48am Saturday at the intersection of Jefferson and Maple. City police say a vehicle driven by 67-year-old Josephine Smith of Mt. Vernon struck a vehicle driven by 60-year-old Diane Houghton of Watson, causing Houghton's vehicle to strike a vehicle driven by 38-year-old Cody Thompson of Vandalia.

Houghton and a passenger in Houghton's vehicle, 65-year-old Linda Aldrich of Mt. Pleasant, were both injured, but both refused treatment.

Smith was cited for disobeying a traffic control device.

The other crash happened at noon Saturday at the intersection of Evergreen and 4th.

Police report a vehicle driven by 60-year-old Michael Mathy of Effingham rear-ended a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Jason DeLong of Effingham. DeLong was injured, but refused treatment. No citations were issued.

   City police are also investigating burglaries from a motor vehicle. The incident occurred while the vehicle was parked in the 900 block of Ealy Street on Sunday between 9pm and 11pm. A rifle was stolen, along with a rifle scope, a rifle case and a hunting light.
