A dehumidifier caught fire in a home early today north of Mason.

Watson Fire Protection District was dispatched at 1:27am to a reported residential structure fire at the home of Glen Wines. The home is located in the 8000 block of 625th Avenue in Jackson Township.

Wines told firefighters he was awakened by an alarming smoke detector and discovered smoke filling his residence.

The first arriving engine company reported moderate smoke on the first floor of the residence and heavy smoke in the basement. Firefighters entered the basement and discovered zero visibility conditions. Using a thermal imaging camera, firefighters were able to locate the fire, which was determined to be the smoldering remnants of the dehumidifier. The area around the unit was extinguished and crews began ventilating the smoke from the basement, followed by the first floor of the residence.

The fire was confined to the dehumidifier, but smoke damage was present throughout the house. The residence was turned back over to Wines after smoke removal was completed.

Watson firefighters received aid from Shumway Fire Protection District with an engine company and a chief, and Edgewood Bi-County Fire Protection District provided a Tender.

Units were on scene for just over an hour.
