The Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday denied a request for a variance that would have allowed erection of a taller than normally allowed sign.

Toby, Jessy and David Draves sought a variance that would have allowed erection of a 45-foot-tall pole on the city's northwest side that would have held two signs.

City Engineer Jeremy Heuerman said the Draves' plan was to rent out one of the signs on the pole. Heuerman said the Board couldn't find a reason that approving the variance would eliminate a hardship.

Three members voted to deny the request, one voted in favor of the request, and one member abstained from the vote.
