Today marks the start of the filing period for the 2017 election.

There are some exceptions...communities like Dieterich and Watson that caucus to choose their candidates, and Teutopolis, where candidates filed earlier...but most communities begin their filing period today. In Effingham County, that includes Montrose, Beecher City, Edgewood, Shumway and Mason.

The filing period runs through Monday, December 19.

Today also begins the filing period for school board candidates. In Effingham Unit 40, there are three seats to be filled. Those are now held by Chris Koester and Brian Wick of Summit Township and Steve Bone of Douglas Township. Koester is filling the unexpired term of Laurie Borrelli and was appointed to serve until the election. He has the option of filing as a candidate for election.

Today is also the start of the filing period for community college trustee. At Lake Land College, there are three six-year terms to be filled. Those seats are now held by Robert Luther, Doris Reynolds and Mike Sullivan, all of Mattoon.

This is also the filing period for park boards. There are two six-year terms up for grabs on the Effingham Park Board. Those seats are now held by David McDevitt and Russ Sehy. There are also two seats on the Teutopolis Park Board, now held by Paul Grunloh and John Wessel. The Dieterich Park Board, which is reorganizing, is also seeking candidates for that body, and there are seats up on the Mason-Edgewood Park Board.

Election Day is April 4, 2017.
