The Effingham Public Library has secured a tenant for some available space in the building and might have more guests on the way.

Library Director Amanda McKay said the Library Board will be considering a lease agreement with Deep Rock Energy for 600 square feet of space in the basement of the building.

Additionally, the Incubator Network that is looking for space for start-up or fledgling businesses is expected to utilize a computer lab in the northeast part of the main floor. McKay said demand for the computer lab has lessened as more people are utilizing phones or tablets for online access. She said any agreement reached with the Incubator Network will include provisions that the space can be utilized by the library when classes are offered.

The Library Board this month discussed ongoing fundraising efforts. McKay said about $500,000 is needed to clear the books on the library relocation and renovation project. She said they plan to transition to an annual fundraising campaign. The goal will be to use half the money raised to retire the debt with the other half used to pay for landscaping work at the library.

The Board approved a $50 fee for any pop up shop wanting to utilize library space; renewed liability insurance for 2017 with the City of Effingham; agreed to cancel the Board's December meeting; and approved work on a strategic plan for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday since staff report for work on that day even though the library is closed to the public.

The work on a strategic plan will begin on January 14 at a morning retreat. McKay said they will utilize the Harwood Institute and said the focus will not just be the library but instead the Effingham community and how the library can be of most service.

The Board also learned that recently-appointed member Carol Utz cannot serve at this time due to recovery from surgery. Another member is being sought with the provision that Utz will still like to serve when she recovers. Contact McKay if you're interested in serving.
