Mattoon resident Lamont Mimms has pleaded guilty to murder in the July shooting death of Eric Lavaly in Greenup.

(MIMMS)

The 23-year-old Mimms has been sentenced to 23 years in prison in exchange for the guilty plea.

Authorities say Mimms, Lavaly and Trenton Adamson were at Adamson's house in Greenup with a plan to rob Kyle Covault of Indianapolis when Covault arrived to do a drug deal. Instead, a scuffle ensued and then shots were fired with Lavaly killed and Covault wounded.

Mimms will have to serve three years' mandatory supervised release once he's out of prison. Other charges related to the incident were dismissed as part of the negotiated plea.

Covault is next due in court January 30 on counts of possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and unlawful use of a weapon.

Adamson is due in court December 12 on a count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Another defendant, Laurinda McWhorter of Charleston is also charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Her case is due to go to trial December 14.
