Three holiday reminders.

First, today is the final day to take shoeboxes to Cornerstone Christian Church on South Banker in Effingham for Operation Christmas Child.

Shoeboxes will be accepted until 8pm. Fill the shoeboxes with toys, combs or brushes, books, pens and paper, non-melting candy and other things kids would enjoy. The shoeboxes will be shipped to children throughout the world.

Second, today is the deadline to phone if you plan to attend the Community Thanksgiving Meal sponsored by the Effingham County FISH Organization. It's the 12th Annual free dinner and will be held again at the Sacred Heart Parish Center at 407 S. Henrietta in Effingham.

The free dinner is open to anyone in Effingham County who wants to gather together on Thanksgiving Day. The dinner will start at 11:30am. Home-delivered meals will be available for homebound individuals. There will also be transportation available by volunteers and through Effingham County Public Transportation.

Those persons wishing to attend the meal are asked to RSVP no later than today by phoning Susan Elke at 868-5913, Harold Heth at 868-2854 or the Senior Center at 347-5569. A reminder that even though the Senior Center is one location to phone for a reservation, the dinner is not just for seniors. When you RSVP, please let them know if you need a ride, or phone Effingham County Public Transportation at 855-755-2478 by noon Wednesday to reserve a ride.

Today is also the deadline to reserve a home-delivered meal by phoning the Senior Center at 347-5569.

If you're interested in helping with Thursday's meal, phone Susan Elke at 868-5913.

Third, applications for 2016 Jasper County law enforcement Shop With a Cop Program are still available at the Jasper County Sheriff's Office in Newton. Children must be Jasper County residents, and children must be ages 3 to 14.

Parents who would like their children to participate must return their applications to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office by 2pm on Wednesday, November 23.
