An early Saturday morning car-pedestrian accident on Route 40, a quarter mile west of St. Elmo, killed Gregory Stoner, 50, of St. Elmo.

State Police indicate at 3:01am Stoner was walking west in the driving lane of Route 40 after crashing his car in a private driveway when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Ashley Lakin of Brownstown.

In an attempt to avoid hitting Stoner, Lakin's vehicle swerved into the roadside ditch on the southside of the roadway and overturned on its top before coming to a stop.

Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen pronounced Stoner dead at the scene. Lakin was taken to HSHS St.Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment of her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Fayette County Coroner's Office and the Illinois State Police.
