A motorcycle driven by Juan Vasquez of Effingham was traveling north on highway 45, just north of Lakeland College in Mattoon Thursday morning. At 7:48am. a car driven by Emily Garriott, of Charleston, was exiting Interstate 57 south at exit 184. She stopped at the stop sign then proceeded through the intersection in an attempt to travel south on highway 45. As she crossed the the two lanes of northbound highway 45, Garriott was struck on the driver side by the motorcycle operated by Vasquez. The impact caused the car to spin coming to a rest facing north in the center of the intersection. Vasquez was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the paved shoulder just west of the northbound lane of the highway, north of the intersection.

Witnesses performed CPR at the scene before Vasquez was taken by ambulance to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care Center where he passed away Thursday evening.

Garriott refused treatment at the scene.
