At the Effingham Community Unit 40 School Board meeting Monday night the board learned the roof over the auditorium at the junior high building was in need of more repairs that will cost the district an additional $55,542. The isssues were discovered Monday as layers of the old roof were removed and revealed holes in the metal decking, that was also sagging above the auditorium.  Mid-State Roofing of Beecher City, who the board had already approved for roof work to be done above the gymnasium and classrooms at a cost of $216,458 at last month's meeting, is working on putting the roofing down after replacing the metal decking.

In better news, the Unit 40 Mentoring Program was acknowledged by the board for recently earning the Gold Star Status by the Illinois Mentoring Partnership for its outstanding work. The award will be received by the Mentoring Program on January 10.

The Board also recognized the junior high softball team for its third place finish at the State Tournament ending the season with a victory and a record of 18-4.

The Education Foundation reported $12,600 in donations was raised at the Trivia Night and that five teacher grant requests were accepted for a total of almost $6,000. They also announced the Breakfast with Santa will be December 3 from 7 to 11am.

Personnel matters were also addressed as the board acknowledged the intent to retire by Becky Parker and Becky Peno at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Accepted resignations of Lin Allmon as paymaster and Dana Koester as high school varsity cheer coach. Marlene Ruholl was transfered to a cook position at Effingham Junior High.
