The count is over, and over 3,500 pounds of caps and lids were donated for the Harmony Playground project.

That amount translates to a discounted price on eight benches for the playground.

From February to September, the community from across Central Illinois gave caps and lids. Our studios at Fayette and Willow were one of several locations where caps and lids were turned in. The caps and lids will be traded in to Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, Indiana for the discount on the benches.

Green Tree Plastics has a program called ABC Promise Partners. ABC Promise was started in March 2010 by a team of six eighth graders as their entry in a nationwide academic competition in community problem-solving. The topic was recycling. Their benches are made from 100% recycled plastic. You can find out more about the effort at www.greentreeplastic.com

It turns out that the community response was so overwhelming that were more donations than needed. Harmony Playground organizers decided to pay it forward and let others who wanted to start collecting for a bench of their own have a great start.

Harmony Playground will be taking the 3,500 pounds of caps and lids to Green Tree Plastics in late October.

The Harmony Playground committee members and parents wanted to thank the community for their time and efforts to help make the playground a reality for kids.
