A Lakewood man has been given prison time after he pled guilty to a count of unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.

54-year-old Tommy L. Woolard entered the guilty plea this week in Shelby County Circuit Court.

The case stemmed from an incident on May 28, when deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence in Lakewood after receiving a 911 call from someone who claimed he had just shot himself.

When the deputies reached the location, they saw a man sitting in an upright position leaning against a shed. The man had a rifle laying across him with the butt of the gun on the ground and the barrel pointing at his neck area. One of the deputies yelled at the man, who was identified as Woolard, but got no response. The deputy was able to grab the rifle since Woolard was passed out due to being intoxicated.

Shelby Ambulance Service arrived as the deputy was able to get Woolard to answer some questions. Authorities say Woolard became combative and reached down to his right side. Both deputies on scene grabbed Woolard and located a buck knife in a leather sheath on his right hip. One of the deputies grabbed the knife and threw it a safe distance from everyone.

Woolard was taken for treatment and was later arrested.
