Travel on US Route 40 between Effingham and Altamont will be impacted the next two days by road work.

The Illinois Department of Transportation began work Wednesday morning to replace a concrete box culvert. The culvert is located 0.9 miles east of Altamont, and the highway is closed at that location.

A marked detour utilizing Interstate 70 is in place and motorists should follow the signs to avoid any delays. The work is scheduled to be completed and Route 40 opened to traffic by 7am Friday.

In addition to the culvert replacement, milling and asphalt paving will take place on the portion of Route 40 from Division Street in Altamont to 0.3 miles west of Lake Sara Road over the next 30 days. The milling and paving will take place under flaggers and one lane will remain open while the work is completed. Motorists are asked to slow down and use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

Howell Paving of Mattoon is the prime contractor and Steve Miller is the Resident Engineer for IDOT. Phone Bob Utz at IDOT at 342-3951 for more information.
