August has been unusually wet for most of Illinois, according to Eric Schmidt of EJS Weather located in Newton.

“In our part of the state, southeastern Illinois, since Friday we’ve gotten over six inches of rain,” said Schmidt, a guest on Wednesday’s “RFD Today” radio program on the RFD Radio Network®. "We've had over seven inches of rain in the month of August so far."

Schmidt told show host Alan Jarand that if the pace continues, it could make August 2016 one of the wettest on record.

The Illinois-based meteorologist said last weekend’s deluge in some parts of the state, such as Springfield, resulted from remnants of a tropical storm system that has also caused major flooding in parts of the South.
