Altamont resident John R. Laver was in court Tuesday on a Class X felony count of aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon.

Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said it's alleged that the 58-year-old Laver sexually assaulted a woman while armed with a knife. Laver also faces a count of aggravated unlawful restraint, a Class 4 felony count. Kibler said the count stems from the woman's hands being bound with duct tape during the assault.

Kibler said the incident is alleged to have occurred on Saturday afternoon on rural property owned by the victim southwest of Funkhouser. Laver was arrested by sheriff's deputies on Sunday morning.

Bond for Laver has been set at $250,000. He is due for his first court appearance with counsel on August 8.
