Sheriff's Department Handles Two Crashes w/Injuries on Sunday

Effingham County Sheriff's Department handled two crashes with injuries on Sunday.

One crash happened at 8:50am on Funkhouser Road, just north of 975th Avenue in Jackson Township.

Deputies report an unknown vehicle drove into the path of a pickup truck driven by 17-year-old Joe Phillips of Effingham. Phillips swerved to avoid the unknown vehicle, left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Phillips was injured and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Phillips was cited for not wearing a seat belt.

The other crash occurred at 7pm at the intersection of Illinois Routes 32 and 33, northwest of Effingham.

A car driven by 20-year-old Tanner Barnes of Shumway crossed the centerline and ran off the roadway, struck a utility box and went into south ditch of Route 33.

Barnes was injured, but declined treatment.

Barnes was cited for not wearing a seat belt.
