A native of Effingham was fatally injured in a hit and run incident Friday night in St. Louis.

Nicholas Barnes would have been 26 years old today.

According to various media sources, Barnes was struck by a car at Lindell Boulevard and North Sarah Street in the city's Central West End shortly before 10:30pm. The impact knocked Barnes under the wheels of a second car. The driver of the first car left the scene. The driver of the second car stopped and co-operated with police.

Witnesses gave police a description of the first vehicle. They reportedly told police that the driver of the first vehicle, a male, got out of his car and saw Barnes, and then left the scene.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
