Fire damaged a home in Mattoon Monday morning.

Mattoon firefighters were called to 905 South 16th Street at 6:40am. Crews arrived to find fire and heavy black smoke coming from the east side of the residence through a window blown out by the heat. Fire crews made access through a door.

Mattoon Fire Chief Tony Nichols reported that the fire caused heavy damage in a foyer area and kitchen. Smoke and water damage was also caused throughout the rest of the residence.

The lone occupant of the house, who was not identified, escaped the structure without injury.

Firefighters say the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Mattoon firefighters were assisted by Charleston firefighters, Mattoon police and Dunn's Ambulance.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 8:48am.
