A major anhydrous ammonia leak in Stewardson resulted in an evacuation of at least a part of the community early Tuesday morning. Things were back to normal by mid-morning.

Stew-Stras schools are open today, but Trinity Lutheran School in Stewardson is closed. Buses ran everywhere in the Stew-Stras district except for in the village of Stewardson.

The leak occurred around 5:30am from a transport vehicle at The Equity plant in Stewardson. The release caused a cloud of anhydrous to form over the north and west parts of Stewardson. Fire crews from companies throughout the area were dispatched to assist Stewardson emergency personnel in a door-to-door canvass to make sure residents were okay.

One person drove their vehicle into the anhydrous cloud, thinking it was fog, and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for examination.

We have photos both from our Wayne Moran who reported live from the scene as well as from listeners of the scene this morning in Stewardson.
