Fire damaged a house in Mattoon Monday afternoon.

Mattoon Fire Chief Tony Nichols said the fire was reported just after 3:30pm at 2921 Moultrie. Firefighters found fire and smoke coming from the west side of the residence when they reached the scene. Fire crews gained entry through the front door and put out the fire.

The fire caused damage in the living room area, but smoke and water damage was done throughout the residence.

Nichols said the only person in the house escaped without injury, but then scraped his leg in a fall on the way out. Firefighters treated the man at the scene.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 6:05pm.

Fire officals Friday said the cause of the blaze was determined to be "accidental, due to improper disposal of smoking material."
