Layoffs Take Effect at EIU

Today is the final scheduled work day for 177 employees of Eastern Illinois Univeristy, at least for a while.

Layoffs announced several weeks ago due to the lack of a state budget take effect.

EIU President David Glassman has said the employees will be recalled as soon as funding is available. No one knows when that might happen.

Glassman and the presidents of Southern Illinois University and Western Illinois University made presentations Thursday to the Illinois Senate Appropriations Committee on next year's budget, but this year's plight was a major topic. 

While no money has been received by universities this year, Governor Bruce Rauner has proposed a 20% cut in funding for universities in next year's budget.
