ARC Becomes Community Support Systems

The ARC Community Support Systems Board of Directors has voted to change the name of its not-for-profit corporation which provides services to individuals with intellectual disabilities to Community Support Systems.

In a unanimous decision the Board of Directors agreed that it is time to drop the negative connotation that comes with the acronym “ARC” and move forward with its mission to fully embrace opportunities for individuals with disabilities to choose and realize their goals. Gone is the abbreviation that the Board of Directors and staff feel is no longer appropriate or sensitive when referencing individuals whom they serve.

Community Support Systems Board President Greg Bean said, “We are committed to help the people that we serve to live successfully in their community. This change is a positive step toward their success.”

What began in 1962 as a day school for 12 students with disabilities has grown to a sizable human service organization employing over 125 staff members who provide advocacy, education, housing, employment and family support services to more than 3,100 infants, children and adults with disabilities and their families throughout Central and East Central Illinois.

Community Support Systems Executive Director Andy Kistler commented, “I applaud our Board of Directors for having the courage to vacate the abbreviation that has defined our efforts for so many years. The move is indicative of the progressive thinking and compassion centered philosophy that has allowed our service delivery systems to grow and meet the needs of so many individuals and their families.” Kistler emphasized that there will be no change to the services or programs.
