A Beecher City man was arrested after an incident at Walmart in Effingham Thursday night.

Effingham city police say 20-year-old Anthony S. Evans was arrested on a series of charges including aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Investigator Todd Ebbert said Evans and a companion, 22-year-old Shane Mitchell of Cowden, were at Walmart about 7:30pm when they became involved in an altercation with some other individuals. Ebbert said at some point Evans reportedly retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and displayed the weapon. He said it is not charged that Evans ever pointed the weapon at anyone.

Police were summoned and Evans was arrested on those two charges as well as obstructing justice, no FOID card, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct and driving on a suspended license.

Police arrested Mitchell on a disorderly conduct charrge.
