An Effingham County jury Thursday found Effingham resident Benjamin Wilson not guilty on a charge of aggravated battery. The count arose from a stabbing complaint in the 500 block of North 1st Street in Effingham this past September.

The attorney for the 24-year-old Wilson, Scott Ealy, said Wilson was exonerated on a claim of self-defense.

"Being made a defendant in this matter last September was a real disappointment for Benji," Ealy said. "The jury's unanimous decision in his favor will mean a clean record for this young military veteran and a brighter future."

Wilson had been staying at a friend's apartment as a short-term guest, according to Ealy. A dispute arose with a downstairs neighbor when that person shut off the power to the apartment in response to purportedly loud music.

Wilson had been held in Effingham County Jail since his arrest in September.
