Ed Blumer and Sue Heth know whereof they speak when it comes to those dealing with mental illness; they have been caregivers for loved ones who've dealt with the illness.

Blumer and Heth spoke to the Effingham Noon Rotary Club on December 30 about NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.

Both Blumer and Heth had a child affected by mental illness. They are part of NAMI of Effingham County Support Group, a gathering of individuals who are supporting someone with mental illness. The group will next meet on Wednesday, January 16 at 5pm at the Effingham County Senior Center, just south of Martin's IGA.

Organizers say the goal is learning and supporting each other; it's a chance for caregivers to find out they are not alone in their struggle.

A Family-to-Family Class will start February 16. To reserve a spot, phone 217-690-6583 or e-mail namieffingham@gmail.com.
