The Effingham Public Library has completed its first three months at its new location with record circulation numbers.

Previously called the Helen Matthes Library, the library has now expanded from 13,000 sq. ft. to 27,000 sq. ft. following a nine-month remodeling of the former Fifth Third Bank building. Since reopening it has seen remarkable year on year increases across the board in all categories of circulation. Overall Circulation numbers increased by 26% in October and 28% in November. The number of new library cards issued in that combined period increased by 170% with nearly 200 people and families signing up for a library card.

Amanda McKay, Library Director noted, “We are delighted to announce such a dramatic increase. It confirms just how badly this community needed a larger library. Our old location was well-loved but small and cramped, making it hard for our library users to browse and find items in our collection. The lack of space throughout the old library made for a less enjoyable library experience. We have been thrilled to see our regular and new library users enjoying and using our new library space and our collection so enthusiastically.

We are especially excited with the Suzette Brumeleve Children’s Area which has resulted in a near 50% increase in Children’s Circulation; a recognition of just how much local children and their families are enjoying this warm and engaging area. Whether it’s our youngest Readers taking part in Tuesday morning Story Time in their own dedicated Programming Room, or Junior-High and High School Students dropping in after school to use our Young Adult Area and the quiet Study Rooms to complete their homework and school projects, the increased use is visible for all to see.”

The Library’s normal hours are Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Library is closed on Sundays.
