Southeastern Container has ended production at the Effingham plant, and operations will be completely shuttered by the end of January.

Michelle Yanik, who serves as Vice President for Manufacturing Services at Southeastern Container's corporate headquarters in Enka, North Carolina, said production has ended in Effingham, and said there are just a few employees working on shipping out the remaining inventory and cleaning up the production and shipping areas.

The plant produced Coca Cola bottles, but a decision to produce the bottles where the soda is produced eliminated the need for the production facility.

Yanik said all activity related to Southeastern Container will end no later than January 29. As to the facility, Yanik said it was leased by Southeastern Container, but said the company has been actively working with the local landlord and a commercial real estate group to identify a potential new tenant for the building.

As for the former staffers, Yanik said the administrative staff has been working with the employees, other employers, and the state to assist employees with finding other positions. In addition, employees have relocation options within Southeastern Container where there are available openings they might be interested in filling. Yanik said approximately half of the employees have already found other work in the Effingham area.
