Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed compromise legislation aimed at lowering the cost of unemployment insurance.

Business groups and labor unions came to terms on the new standards.

Under new guidelines, misconduct that can lead to someone being disqualified from receiving benefits would be expanded. Individuals who provide false information on an employment application or damages employer property through gross negligence would be examples of the expanded misconduct scenarios. Social security recipients would also receive a reduction in unemployment benefits.

Some parts of the legislation are already in effect while others will become effective January 3rd.
