A group of volunteers left Cornerstone Christian Church in Effingham tired, but happy, on Monday night.

The volunteers helped organize, collect and ship 22,909 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse. The shoeboxes, contributed by area residents, contain toys, candy, hygiene items, socks and shoes, and writing materials to be shipped worldwide to children in need. Also included is a message of God's love in the language of the children who will receive the shoeboxes.

Local organizer Pat Berry said Monday was a "long, long, long day", but reported just before 11pm the total of shoeboxes collected.
