The guest speaker at Wednesday's Effingham Veterans Day observance urged those gathered to celebrate veterans and to advocate on their behalf.

Sergeant Major (Retired) Don Huskey spoke at the Veterans Memorial dressed in the uniform of a World War II paratrooper. Huskey reflected on his own service, but also those of his late father and of his son who is currently serving in the military. He also asked the crowd to applaud those who served in the military, with a particular word for the World War II veterans in attendance. Huskey termed them a "national treasure".

Huskey urged those in attendance to seek proper treatment for veterans and to seek accountability in the services they are provided.

Effingham American Legion Post #120 served as the host organization, but there was participation by all of the service organizations. Post Commander Dennis Brown served as emcee, Post Chaplain Lou Buennemeyer offered the invocation and delivered the benediction, Julie and Pat Zuber sang the National Anthem, and Alex Jeffries performed "Taps".
