The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms can still be expected in our area Wednesday evening, but they are not likely to be as intense as first feared.

Officials at the Weather Service office in Lincoln say the storms will visit our area between 6 and 9pm, extending to 10pm in the eastern parts of our listening area. Weather officials say damaging winds will likely the chief concern in our area, with wind gusts up to 50MPH.

Some were wondering whether the storms would be similar to the tornadoes that hit Washington and Gifford, Illinois in November a couple of years ago. Weather Service officials, though, say the only similarity is that these storms will occur in November. There is less moisture in the atmosphere than then, and temperatures are not expected to approach the almost 70 degree readings experienced ahead of those storms. Another factor is that the storms are to arrive in the late evening, much later in the day than the storms of a couple of years ago, so cooler conditions should exist.

The storms are expected to be out of the state by midnight Wednesday night.
