We've heard from three local residents who've been telephoned on Thursday in yet another tax scam.

This time, phone calls are being made by someone who says they represent the IRS. The caller says a lawsuit is being filed against the resident and asks them to phone this number...360-967-4374. The phone number comes back to a location in Castle Rock, Washington.

Another person got a call from this number..202-779-4631. The caller ID on that number comes back to Washington, DC but, once again, the IRS does not transact business by phone.

Effingham County Sheriff Dave Mahon said Thursday that several residents are receiving a phone message from an automated machine directing them to phone the IRS at a 346, 425 or 509 area code. The message states that if the call is not made, there will be repercussions from the IRS. Some calls threaten police action if the return call is not made.

Once again, the matter is a scam. Feel free to simply hang up. The sheriff reminds to never give out personal information over the phone, and to safeguard your personal information.
