The annual Artisan Fair in downtown Effingham has been affected by rain through the years, even though various months have been tried for the event.

Now that the Effingham Public Library is open, the Artisan Fair organizations have inquired whether the new library home could serve as the rain location for the event. Lisa Elliott of the Artisan Fair asked the library board for permission to shift the event there in case of inclement weather.

Library Director Amanda McKay said the board was generally favorable to the idea. Now, the work will shift to deciding the logistics of the proposal.

Board members this week also discussed fundraising efforts to pay off the cost of the new library. McKay said as the library staff has been in the building and can see items that could be named in honor of donors, the opportunities have grown. She said there is now a category for donations of $10,000 to make giving more affordable and still provide naming opportunities.

The Board changed its meeting participation policy to mirror current practice. People will be allowed to speak at meetings as long as they sign in before the meeting begins, as long as their comments don't exceed five minutes, and as long as the comments focus on library matters. It was also decided not to change the meeting room policy; alcohol will not be allowed for rental events. McKay said they are not having any trouble accommodating meetings under the current guidelines.

The library board passed the levy for the coming fiscal year. Due to an increase in the estimated EAV in the library district, the library is anticipating an additional $30,000 in revenue. Board members were also reminded that Family Read Night will take place on November 19 from 6-8pm.
