The Effingham Public Library Board has authorized Library Director Amanda McKay to negotiate the sale of the old Helen Matthes Library on Market Avenue.

McKay said Thursday that no sale is imminent; the action by the library board authorized her to negotiate the sale of the building with final approval of the price and terms to be approved by the Board.

The sale of the Market Avenue property has always been a component of the financing of the redevelopment of the former 5th/3rd Bank building on North 3rd Street into the new library home. The library moved into the Market Avenue location in 1956.
