An Effingham man has been charged with criminal trespass to a residence and with injuring a police officer.

Effingham City Police arrested 35-year-old Kenneth A. Laws early Monday morning for the incident that occurred at a residence on South Maple Street. Police had arrested Laws on a home invasion count, but Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler instead charged Laws with criminal trespass to a residence with a person present, as well as resisting or obstructing a peace officer causing injury. Both counts are Class 4 felonies, punishable by up to one to three years in prison.

Laws was in court Tuesday morning to hear the charges. He's due back in court on Thursday for his first appearance with counsel. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was being held in Effingham County Jail under $50,000 bond.
