An unusual crash in the interstate construction zone at Effingham took place just before 4:30am Sunday.

State police say a vehicle driven by Terra Helmer, address unknown, was heading north on I-57 at the same time a vehicle driven by an unknown individual was traveling east on I-70 just past the split. The unknown vehicle then veered left and traveled through the construction zone in front of Helmer's vehicle and Helmer's unit struck the unknown vehicle. However, the suspect vehicle did not stop and headed north on I-57.

A passenger in Helmer's vehicle, 60-year-old Judy Atkinson, address unknown, was injured in the crash and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, and then was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana for additional treatment.
