Crashes Investigated

Effingham city police investigated two crashes with injuries that occurred on Wednesday.

Just after 8am, a collision occurred at Wabash and 4th. Police say a vehicle driven by 42-year-old Tommy Quance of Effingham rear-ended a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Heather Mayhaus of Effingham.

A passenger in Quance's vehicle, 24-year-old Cory Williams of Charleston, was injured, but refused treatment. Williams was cited for not wearing a seat belt. Quance was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.

Just before 5:30pm, a vehicle driven by 16-year-old James Blackwell of Effingham struck a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Dana Robertson of Effingham at Grove and Henrietta. Blackwell was injured, but declined treatment. Blackwell was cited for failure to yield.

A Dieterich teenager was injured in a crash Friday morning on 1775th Road just south of 1000th Avenue near the old Higgs Welding location, west of St. Aloysius Catholic Church at Bishop Creek.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports 17-year-old Lauren Kurtz of Dieterich was northbound at 5:24am when she fell asleep. Kurtz's vehicle ran off the road, struck a ditch and overturned.

Kurtz was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash. She was injured and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.
