Clay County board members this week discussed options renewing an Enterprise Zone to foster economic development.

An Enterprise Zone now in place includes the City of Flora as well as portions of Clay City and Xenia. The Zone is up for renewal, and Luke Eastin presented information this week that the renewal application would only include Flora. However, Clay City Mayor Trevor Bissey and Louisville Mayor Dale Murbarger also spoke to the Board, indicating that they want their communities including in any Zone application. Another option, they suggested, if Flora wants to go it alone is to form another Zone including the rest of the interested areas. Applications are expected to be filed in 2016.

Board members also accepted the resignation of longtime Board member Sue Pettit, effective immediately. Pettit, a Republican, represents District M, the area south and west of Flora. Republican officials from that area will make a recommendation to the Board for a replacement for Pettit.

The Clay Board approved a local agency agreement for replacing the Gill Bridge over Little Muddy Creek carrying Jasper Road in Hoosier Township, and an engineering agreement for the plans to replace the bridge.

Board members approved purchase of a site for a Clay City Clinic to be overseen by Clay County Hospital. Also approved was continuing the county's major medical plan for 2016 and defining a full-time county employee as anyone working 30 or more hours each week.

The Board approved County Clerk Brenda Britton remaining as HOPE Trust Board member for the county, reappointed Chris Bible to the Clay County Housing Authority, and appointed Calvin Booth to the Airport Authority.
